City were formed in 1922 and elected to the Football League in 1929 at the
expense of Ashington (anyone remember them as founder members of the Alliance,
now the Conference?). They moved to Bootham Crescent in 1932 and 6 years later a
ground record 28,123 watched them draw with Huddersfield in the FA Cup.

York could be described (fondly!) as a club that rarely troubled the
statisticians for many years! 1950 saw them seek re-election and 1953 their
highest ever finish (to that point) of 4th in the old Div 3N.

However, 1955 saw an achievement unsurpassed until 'modern times'. Still in Div
3 N they reached the semi final of the FA Cup drawing 0-0 with Newcastle at
Hillsborough but losing the replay 0-4. Having finally awakened the
statisticians they started to make up for lost time. They gained their first
ever promotion in 1959 followed by their first relegation in 1960! They reached
the quarter finals of the League Cup in 1962, sought re-election in 1964, got
promoted again in 1965 and relegated back in 1966. Re-election in 1969,
promotion to Div 3 in 1971 and promotion again to the second Div in 1974. 1975
saw their highest ever finish - 15th in Div 2 but are relegated again in 1976
and 1977. More re-elections in 1978 and 1981. Back up the football ladder in
1984 and an FA Cup victory over Arsenal in 1985 before football's gravity field
takes over and they fall back to Div 4 again in 1988.

Promotion via the play-offs in 1993 and losing play-off semi-finalists the
following year, Man Unt and Everton are knoecked out of the Coca Cola Cup in
1996 and 7 respectively followed by the inevitable relegation in 1999.

Financial disaster in 1993 sees the club saved by their Supporters Trust but
relegation to the Conference in 2004.

Today the Trust still ,owns 25% of the club and the ground is now known as Kit
Kat Crescent.

City have not started well but gained their first point in med-week away to
Exeter and, of course, include ex-Vics players Paul Brayson and Stuart Elliott
