STAFFORD 2 v 0 VICS
Despite a controversial second goal close to the end Vics could not complain at the overall result. Looking tired and a little jaded with another long trip to Gravesend on Thursday the simple fact was Stafford needed and wanted it more and had more energy left in reserve!
As is all too common with such a fixture pile up it was the 11 fittest
that probably made it on to the pitch and they started well looking
well comfortable and in complete control for the first 25 minutes. A
Dean shot was deflected wide after good work by Townson after 3 minutes
and Smart hit a half chance over after the Stafford defence failed to
clear. More poor defending by Daniels, who failed to clear another Vics
attack saw Duggan the Stafford keeper, claw out a Townson shot from
under the bar. Roberts had a shot blocked before another half clearance
saw Townson hit an overhead kick over.
On 26 minutes Stafford had their first meaningful shot on goal that
went harmlessly wide but it did signal the end of Vics dominance and
from then on Stafford gained the upper hand and, ultimately, control of
the match. Connett made a great save from Lovatt on 32 minutes and
Grayson had a close range shot blocked after good work by Madjo.
Battersby was booked for a silly tackle but there was little more of
note as Vics faded.
The second half was all Stafford's. Madjo fired wide of an open goal on
the hour and Daniel headed wide. It was no surprise when Stafford did
go in front. Their best player, Madjo, made the most of a Charnock
mistake to run on goal and Connett inexplicably tried to save a 15 yard
with his legs only to half block it and see it go in. Dean was booked
after a confrontation on 76 minutes and was immediately subbed by Shaw
and soon afterwards Byrne replaced Smart. The game was sealed on 87
minutes when Madgo chased a long ball over the top and appeared to
barge Griffiths to the ground (he was injured to the extent of being
subbed by Brown) went on and scored. A poor refereeing decision that,
fortunately, made no impact on the final result or Vics season! 3
points were vital for Stafford and moves them closer to safety and for
Vics it was one more end of season game out of the way as they are now
mathematically safe from relegation.
