Vics 2 (Byrom 10 Mullan 75)
Bury 2 (Hurst 33 38)

A full strength Bury side proved very appropriate opponents for Vics penultimate pre-season friendly at a sun drenched Marston’s Arena.
The visitors pressed from the off and might have taken a 2nd minute lead had Michael Jones taken advantage of a Matt Bailey misjudgement and converted from barely six yards. As it was Vics were quick to capitalise and Steele doggedly won possession wide on the right before cutting inside to deliver a measured cross for BYROM to score with a well executed volley. Vics eagerly took control and Wayne Brown was soon called upon to clutch a Stamp header from beneath his bar. The Bury keeper then followed this up with an excellent near post save that kept out a Mullan shot. Stamp angled a shot narrowly wide following further incisive play from the impressive Byrom. An entertaining contest continued to unfold as Bury stepped up a gear and Ben Futcher and then Eliott Bennett both threatened the goal. Deservedly Bury equalised when the Vics defence capitulated tamely to another well executed break leaving Glynn HURST to complete the simplest of tap ins. The Vics response was immediate and Brown was again called into action to turn a Stamp header over his bar. Yet it was Bury that went into the break ahead when Andy Bishop provided a precision cross for HURST to ghost in at the far post and score.
The game continued to be entertaining and competitive and Welch headed narrowly wide for Vics before Bury’s Bishop shot high and wide from a goal scoring position. Jamie MULLAN began to pose consistent problems for the visitors defence down the right flank and after he had worked an opening for Byrom that had ended just wide of the intended target he forced a hurriedly conceded corner from a teasing cross. And the young Vics winger eventually reaped his hard earned reward when he outpaced the Bury defence to tuck his shot beyond the advancing Brown and inside the post. And it proved to be Vics that finished the stronger and only a superb save from Brown denied trialist Mike Aspin from scoring a late winner.
Once again the manager must have been pleased with both the quality and commitment shown against Football League opposition. On this occasion Byrom showed that he has added a more physical presence to his already undoubted skills. Chris Flynn looks stronger and more influential with each game and Matt Bailey overcame a sticky start to again impress alongside the ever consistent Mark Roberts and Michael Welch. Backed up by another quality performance from keeper Scott Tynan and again led up front with style by Darryn Stamp, underpinned by a general solid performance from all, the outlook for the coming season looks mouthwateringly optimistic.
