Vics 2 ( Roberts 61 Burns 74)
Weymouth 3 (Welch og 51 Beavon 81 pen Coutts 90)
Vics committed professional suicide to gift Weymouth two goals in a contest that they ought to have won with some ease. The Dorset side should have been dead and buried by half time but Vics failed to take any advantage of their superiority.
Crowell was bossing early proceedings and, after having had an early shot saved, narrowly missed the target with a header from a Burns cross. Richard Bernard pulled off three superb saves to twice deny Grand and then Allan, all from headers from corner kicks. Welch headed inches wide from a similar situation before the visitors mustered a response of their own. Ryan Williams lifted a shot narrowly wide before Tynan had to make his first significant contribution and bravely dash from goal to save at the feet of Dubois. An indication of the lapses in concentration that have previously, and today eventually, become alarmingly regular in their play was exampled by Crowell who dallied far too long in possession at the heart of the Vics defence allowing Williams to gain possession and force Tynan into a parried save that was retrieved by a superb Mark Roberts block. Mullan dashed down the right and cut inside to set up Crowell to curl a shot wide.
Stamp had to replace the injured Allan minutes into the second half and then calamity struck. A harmless punt into the box by Mawer saw Welch and Tynan initially opt to take collective responsibility and then both renege leaving an embarassing moment that ended with WELCH colliding with Tynan but not before he headed beyond Tynan and into his own net. More worryingly Welch was left prone and had to be stretchered from the ground. Finally Northwich were able to take advantage of their supremacy at set pieces and ROBERTS scored from a perfectly placed header. Stamp knock downed for Burns to shoot wide. Weymouth replied and Beavon shot wide. With barely 16 minutes remaining BURNS latched onto a ball over the top to lift a precision shot over the advancing keeper and into the net. A win seemed a virtual certainty but fate again proved fickle. Williams turned inside the box and was grounded by a robust Roberts challenge that was interpreted as being a foul and BEAVON converted his penalty kick with aplomb.Flynn and Stamp went close as Vics tried to retrieve the situation but following four minutes of added time they were hit by the ultimate counter punch. COUTTS broke down the right and enjoying more than sufficient time and space he cut inside to deliver an inch perfect finish.
