Vics 0
Cambridge United 1 (Jardim 28)
A much awaited opening league game ended in frustration for Vics following a disappointing single goal defeat. Cambridge showed an admirable work ethic that effectively closed down Vics to strangle the lifeblood from their game. Opportunities proved to be few and far between for both sides and, other than three occassions when Tynan raced from his goal to save bravely at the opposing forwards feet and a header from Stamp that ought to have atleast tested Danny Potter rather than land wide, the game was 28 minutes old before there was any meaningful action and from that passage of play United were able to produce the only goal of the game. Andy Parkinson took adavantage of a moment of indecision from Ryan Brown to create enough space to deliver a weighted cross that was met by the perfect volley from debutant Dutchman JARDIM that flew into the corner of the net. Moments later and only the timeliest of interventions by Sutton from in front of his goal prevented a second goal. Byrom struck a free kick inches wide but that proved to be the only first half response from Vics.
It was 57 minutes before the visiting keeper had an actual shot to save and this he completed with commesurate ease to deny Crowell. Allan and Byrne entered the fray and Allan's first action earned him a booking. Welch struck a shot wide as both keepers remained mainly redundant and only a late solo effort from Byrne that was deflected wide momentarily threatened the now inevitable outcome.
