Vics 2 (Byrom 26 Allan 58)

Rochdale 0

Vics recorded their fourth successive pre-season win against a Rochdale side that incorporated a mixture of second string players and established first team members. The exercise provided a more appropriate test for Dino Maamria's men that they passed with flying colours.

Darryn Stamp looked the best prospect for an early Vics breakthrough, once having a goal ruled out for a marginal offside and then being denied by a save from Grundy after he had shrugged off a Raphaele Evans challenge. Jamie Mullan twice had the opportunity to set up an opportunity for his colleagues but failed on each occassion before Stamp headed against the bar and Flynn followed up to deliver a wide finish. Higgingbotham provided Rochdale's first shot at goal but it failed to test the largely redundant Mike Jones. Jonny Allan got the better of Evans but Nicholas raced across to concede the corner. From the short kick BYROM curled a shot from the widest of angles into the opposite corner of the net. Evans was again at fault when he carelessly gifted possession to Stamp 35 yards from goal and his attempted lob beat the out of position keeper but landed wide of the goal. Another rare Rochdale threat ended with Toner firing a long range shot wide of goal.

If Vics had dominated the first half then Rochdale certainly set out to make amends after the break. Vics had made a number of substitutions and yet it was Dale's single substitution, Adam LeFondre, who ought to have scored from in front of goal but he contrived to slice a Barnes cross wide from barely 6 yards. Coming increasingly under the cosh the outstanding Welch remained stolid and not only cleared a header from off his goal line but executed a number of telling interceptions. He was ably aided by Bailey who continued the good work Mark Roberts had exhibited previously and they were further supported by Flynn who utilised his defensive capabilities when required. Vics secured their win following one such spell of Rochdale pressure and after Tynan had done well to keep out a Lambert shot Danny Williams broke with assurance to get wide and deliver a far post cross for ALLAN to score with a far post header. Rochdale continued to push forward with little effect and other than Dagnall and Toner efforts that produced good saves from Tynan a fourth consecutive win never really looked in doubt.
