Vics 1 v 3 Torquay 3
Two goals in the opening 26 minutes realistically ended this as a contest, although to their credit Vics did show some late fight to give a measure of hope of an unlikely draw.
The manager rang the changes following the disappointing results in the previous two games but for the opening 45 minutes they had little effect. And within 11 minutes they were trailing following a cross from Nicholson that Brown failed to cut out leaving Tim STILLS to control on his chest and execute the perfect finish. Defensively alarm bells were constantly ringing and when Stevens took advantage of the space made available to him down the Torquay right his cross, initially palmed out by Connett, was converted at the far post by Lee PHILLIPS. Vics' defensive discomfort continued and when Welch and Birch both went for, and then failed to deal with along kick from keeper Raynor, Stevens really ought to have done better than shoot wide of a gaping goal. Robertson headed wide of goal from another set piece before Michael Byrne headed against the angle as Vics finally mustered a threat. But it was left to Ben Connett to leave Vics with a ray of hope by producing a fine low save to turn another unchallenged Stills header around the post.
Battersby replaced Byrne at half time but the second half opened very mundanely. Torquay appeared content with their lead and Vics failed to make any impact and it was some 25 minutes before there was any action of note. And it was again the visitors that provided the threat after another long ball over the top of the home defence caught them out for pace and with Birch floundering Zebroski beat both the defender and the advancing Connett to the ball but guided his effort wide. Vics worked an unlikely lifeline when Brown ?won possession on the left and Williams engineered an opportunity to cross for Paul TAIT to eventually force the ball over the line from close range. Welch again conceded possession far too easily to allow Zebroski another opportunity but he moved forward menacingly only to scuff a shot wide. Speight moved forward to set up Carr and his 25-yard shot sailed narrowly wide. But, just when it seemed unlikely that we could gain something from the game, Speight did what many of his colleagues had done all afternoon and gave possession away leaving the visitors to break down the left and despite an excellent save by Connet to deny PHILLIPS from his initial shot from a left wing cross he was powerless to prevent the former Exeter and Weymouth striker from following up to seal the points.
