Grays 3 v 1 Vics

Given that Grays had not scored a home goal since August and Northwich had not registered a single league point this season away from home, it was not surprising that today's game was both tentative and uninspiring. But Vics got off to a promising start and were rewarded in the 10th minute when Adam Gross elbowed Maylett in the face inside the penalty area. Surprisingly, the referee chose only to give a spot kick and without further censure on the player, DANNY WILLIAMS stepped up and scored from the spot.

At this stage, things were looking bright although Dennis Oli did slip beyond two challenges to lift the shot over the bar. But Vics continued to dictate play and following good work from Battersby down the right, Carr found space in the box and did a left foot shot that barely cleared the cross bar. The home side responded and Karl Murray got beyond his marker to set up Kedwell who struck a shot against the post. With home pressure gradually growing, Scott Tynan clawed a header from Cooksey out from under his own bar only for MURRAY to follow up and score with a secondary header.

Suddenly Vics, from being reasonably comfortable were now on the back foot and Murray again forced Tynan into a full length save with a shot from the edge of the box. Kedwell then shot wide when well placed, leaving Vics pleased to hear the half time whistle.

At the start of the second half, Chris William had a chance to put Vics back in front but his far post shot was blocked by the home keeper. In the 58th minute, slack defending down the left allowed Kedwell to cross and for MURRAY to score from close range. This effectively ended Vics challenge and hopes of securing any points from the game. Murray almost secured his hat trick moments later when he curled a shot onto the top of the bar. Despite some sporadic Vics raids on goal, the game limped to an almost forgone conclusion and when a series of errors from both sides ended with a final gift of possession at the feet of HEARN, his shot took a slight deflection and was enough to beat Tynan and secure their three points.
