Stevenage 2 (Lewis 29 McMahon 68)

Dino Maamria's men may not have followed up last weeks success with a first league win of the season but they again did enough to convince that they were heading in the right direction.
Highly rated Stevenage set the early pace and Molesley forced a parried save from Tynan and when Hakim followed up Tunnicliffe, the young centre half recontinuing a loan spell from Stockport County following injury, did well to get his body in the way of a goal bound shot. From the resultant corner kick Bramble dragged an opportunity wide. Tynan then produced a vital save to deny Hakim from the edge of the box. And so it would have been frustrating for both the Vics keeper and the manager when the defence conceded an uneccessary free kick and then failed to defend it properly leaving LEWIS with far too much time and space to drive a shot into the far corner of the net from the right hand edge of the box. That the Vics defence required some time to settle was perhaps unsurprising given that Simon Rusk had to deputise for the injured Battersby, teenager Dominic Taylor was brought in from Bury to fill the spot temporarily vacated by the suspended Ryan Brown, teenager James Tunnicliffe replaced the injured Greg Strong, leaving Josh Wilson to push up into midfield.
But eventually settle they did and with that the home side began to gain far more possession. Carr, performing heroics once more in midfield, determedly won possession to find Danny Williams and from his cross Townson sent a header toward goal that seemed to have been directed away from the target by the arm of Mark Arber but the officials refused to confirm what most people in the ground had seen and all appeals for a penalty were ignored and hopes of an equaliser were at least temporarily denied. Townson then broke incisively and his angled shot was barely finger tipped beyond the post by Julian. Carr and Williams engineered an opening for Tait but his shot flashed the wrong side of the upright. Then a clever knock down from Tait set up Danny Williams but his weak finish underlined a factor that had led Vics to trailing by a goal when perhaps they had deserved more.
Northwich continued to hold the upper hand and a passage of play that contained concerted pressure in the opening stages of the second half ought to have produced more than an, admittedly, superb save to keep out a Tait header and a far easier save from Danny Williams once he had cleverly side stepped his marker.
As it was Vics inadequacies in the final quarter were eventually punished when Bramble broke down the right to have a shot cleared off the line by Tunnicliffe only for McMAHON to move in and score with a measured drive.
Luke Horrocks from Woodley replaced Chris Williams and then Maylett replaced Welch as Vics looked to regain a foot hold back into a game they arguably ought to have got something from. But by now they had lost their previous initiative leaving Stevenage to run out more comfortable winners that had not always looked to be the case.
