Exeter 2 (Logan 7 60)

Vics 1 (Byrom 11)

All good things must come to an end but the curtailment of Vics unbeaten run came in the most frustrating of circumstances. Having gone behind to an early goal they quickly got themselves back on level terms and more than matched the home side for the remainder of the game, only to gift Exeter a goal from their only second half attempt on goal.

Exeter opened in a manner that looked set to provide a torrid afternoon for Vics and after a series of raids down the flanks stretched the defence LOGAN got on the end of a right wing cross to score from 8 yards. But 4 minutes later Welch stepped over a 25-yard free kick to leave BYROM to curl Vics first attempt at goal into the roof of the net. Connett bravely denied Moxey when he bore down on goal. Yet gradually Vics began to wrest the initiative and Byrom almost set Carr on goal but the outstretched leg of Marriott was enough to marginally win the chase. Friend clipped the bar at the opposite and leaving Vics to break competently ending with a David Brown shot flashing narrowly wide.

Northwich continued to dominate possession after the break and the second Exeter goal came very much against the run of play. Exeter again got down their right channel and from the cross LOGAN directed a header at goal that ought to have been saved but Connett got down to smother but then allowed the ball to squirm from his grasp and cross the line inside his near post. Vics did their best to produce a second equaliser but, despite remaining on top, they were unable to create another single opening, allowing a clearly relieved Exeter to celebrate a barely deserved victory.

Attendance: 3,562 (86 from Vics)
