Rushden & Diamonds 1 v 0 VICS

VICS lost their first league game after a previous run of four unbeaten games as a Wayne Hatswell header in first half injury time proved to be the only goal of the game.

Manager Maamira made a few changes to the side that won at Altrincham on Boxing Day as he brought Natt Kerr back in the heart of the defence allowing him to move Carr back into midfield alongside Wilson, also returning following a one match suspension, and Rusk was preferred at right back. Adam Morning made his first start for Vics – replacing the suspended Horrocks. The first half was evenly contested with both keepers making a couple of good, if not spectacular saves, and Vics best chance saw Lucas Akins hit a post following good work by Morning.Just when it looked like being a goal less first half Hatswell gave his side the lead when headed in from 12 yards after Andrew Burgess had crossed from the left channel. The second half action seesawed back and to with both teams making half chances.Michael Welch went close for VICS when his 35-yard free-kick was tipped over by keeper Paul Bastock, and the resultant corner saw Danny Williams' goal-bound shot blocked. The 102-strong travelling support saw Jake Speight make his return to first team action after the interval and the lively front-runner spurned his side's best opening when he fired over after a dazzling dribble. Rushden responded with pressure of their own but try as they did they could not increase their lead. In the end this was a decent performance by Vics and with a little bit more luck they may have taken a point from the game but nevertheless they should still be heartened and more than ready for the return game with neighbours Altrincham on New Years day Man of the match: Natt KerrTeam: Tynan, Rusk, Welch, Kerr, Brown, Danny Williams, Carr, Wilson (Byrne 76), Morning, Akins, Farquharson (Speight 63).
