VICS - the team and the fans - marked what could still be their last game with a superb performance, at the Victoria Stadium.

For once they rarely looked like losing as adversity brought out the best in the players, who were playing for reduced wages and possibly none at all.

And the supporters were in fine voice. The crisis brought the best from them, too.

At the finish players and fans joined in mutial applause. They were not going through the motions. There was genuine respect and appreciation between them

First time ever on live TV and first clean Blue Square Premier clean sheet of a sorry season. And that last match, one way or another, under the ownership of Mike Connett, who did not take his usual place in the stand.

While defeat was seemingly not an option - and it was assured by an injury time goalline clearance by Ryan Brown - victory was not likely either.

A goal was threatened when Chris Williams pass across field was volleyed into the danger area by impressive loan winger Danny Williams only for the ball to elude Lee Steele by inches in the first half.

And again in 61 minutes when Richard Battersby released Steele, but the veteran striker ballooned his shot. Brad Maylett brought a save from Andy Marriott and there were half chances for Mike Welch and Kevin Townson.

Adam Stansfield missed a sitter for Exeter, whose must base their promotion hopes on something stronger than a display that was always on a low simmer.

VICS: Tynan; Battersby, Wilson, Strong, Brown; D Williams (Maylett 70), Carr, Welch, C Williams; Townson, Steele.
