Saturday 17th November
Cambridge United 2 v? 1?Vics?
It has to be said that Vics probably deserved something from this game. But, despite enjoying greater possession during several passages of play, they again lacked that effectiveness in vital areas leaving them still without an away point this season.
The first chance of the game fell to Josh Wilson after the home keeper had cleared weakly but his effort lacked real conviction and Potter was happy to complete a comfortable save. Vics were looking comfortable and the best the home side mustered in the opening 20 minutes was a wayward shot from Wolleaston. On the other hand Greg Strong went desperately close with a hooked shot from the edge of the box.
Gradually the home side raised their game and a Knights shot barely clear the bar before Boylan forced Tynan into a quality save. And their improvement gained its reward in the 40th minute when a cross from Boylan was converted at Vics right hand post by RENDELL. Tynan was then again called upon before the break to produce another fine save to deny Knights.
Nevertheless Vics did not deserve to be behind and they quickly rectified the situation after the break when STEELE latched onto a Maylett pass to score his first goal for the club on his return with a clinical finish from the centre of the box. Horrocks then had a free kick saved as Vics were again on top. Maylett wasted a chance when he had been cleverly set up by Horrocks and Steele and sadly it became another case of flattering to decieve.
Rusk lost possession all too easily to Pitt and from his cross Boylan ought to have done better than head high and wide. And it was a case of more indecisive defending that allowed substitute Willmott both the time and space to deliver a measured cross for RENDELL to score with an all too familiar far post header. Cambridge could have rubbed salt in Vics' wounds but Willmott shot over when well placed and then Tynan again showed his class by saving from Boylan.
Yet for periods of the game there was little to choose between the two teams, other than perhaps that extra quality that is required at specific times and in specific areas.
