Salisbury 2 v 0 Vics
Vics' inability to both defend and take advantage of set pieces was never more apparent than today. From the start Robert Matthews headed wide from a set piece and then Luke Oliver similarly went close with no defender claiming responsibility. And so it was no surprise that it was from a free kick that defenders again failed to pick up Matthews and although Connett parried his header, Luke Oliver still had enough time to follow up and score.??
Michael Byrne curled a shot wide after Williams had a free kick blocked but it was another example of how Vics did not make the best of a similarly advantageous situation. Connett fumbled a Tubb's shot that led to Strong having to concede a corner from which Vics again looked very vulnerable. Connett clawed a shot over his own bar from Bartlett but made a hash of the resultant corner and was fortunate to see Oliver head against the upright. ?Going forward, Vics looked far more comfortable than defending and when Heslop won the ball in midfield, he intelligently created an opportunity for Williams, whose shot forced the first meaningful save from Clarke. Matthews again won the ball too easily from a set piece, allowing Oliver to bring a save from Connett.
Vics' hopes were dashed two minutes after the resumption, when yet again they failed to deal with a long free kick that was knocked down by Matthews and with neither defenders nor keeper taking responsibility, allowed Tubbs to score with embarrassing ease. Vics continued to make errors at the back and Battersby let in Matthews who squared to Tubbs who ought to have scored but screwed his shot wide.
Vics' response was sporadic, although substitute Townson did engineer an opening that was deflected narrowly wide .Far too late in the game Battersby and Carr combined to present Coulson with an opportunity that he headed wide.
