Vics 0
Cambridge 2 (Vierra 22 83)
Given the pressure during recent weeks it came as a huge relief for every Vics fan to be able to sit back and basically enjoy the game of football presented to them on this final day of their season.
That Cambridge gained a deserved victory was purely academic because today's match was destined to be more of an opportunity for the Vics players and their supporters to get together and celebrate their escape from relegation.
Much of the first half involved two sides carefully sparring while struggling to take control because their focus lacked the necessary edge that a more serious contest may have dictated. Cambridge did take a 23rd minute lead when Natt Kerr inexplicably stopped before carrying on to chase a long through ball from Gleeson and his misjudgement allowed VIERA ample time and space to break clear and score. Moments later the same player almost repeated the feat but his shot was cleared from the goal line. Burns wasted a rare opening for Vics by heading a Williams cross harmlessly wide from close range. David Brown then failed to find the target from the acutest of angles.
Goal mouth action remained at a premium and the introduction of Steele and Mullan did little to change things. Instead Welch and Roberts were called upon to make vital blocks in front of goal before Allan came on for Burns to a tumultuous welcome. Yet it was the visitors who made the marginally better chances and Kerr cleared off his line, Byrne made an important last ditch tackle 15 yards from goal before Carr headed narrowly wide following an icreasingly rare and effective Vics raid. With six minutes remaining VIERA again latched onto a long ball over the top of the Northwich defence before cutting inside to produce the most clinical of finishes.
At the end Vics were left to celebrate their more recent achievements. After the game awards for Player of the Season to Lee Steele, goal of the season to Michael Carr (v Grays) and prizes to Dino Maamria and Mike Marsh, a recognition of their work in revitalising were presented in front of an appreciative audience.
