Saturday 6th January 2007
St Albans 1 Vics 3

A tummy upset deprived Vics' of the services of both Tony Gallimore and Ryan Brown leaving pre-match plans in tatters and forcing Burr to select Elliott in the unfamiliar role of left back. Otherwise, he was able to include both new signings, Beaumont in midfield and Roberts at centre back.

St Albans struck the first blow with Connett being forced into a less than convincing save from Marwa. But Vics quickly took command and Barwick combined cleverly with Byrne only for a well struck effort from the latter to be turned over the bar by the home keeper. Connett then survived a difficult moment when he almost palmed a corner kick into his own net but the danger was cleared and Vics fortuitously survived. Otherwise they continued to move forward with purpose and gained their reward in the 14th minute when Carr broke to release BYRNE and his firmly struck shot rebounded off the inside of the post and off the back of the keeper before nestling into the back of the net. Allan ought to have added to the lead but delayed too long having been set clear by Brayson and he was eventually dispossesssed. McCarthy then sent Brayson clear but he aso failed to take advantage of his one on one with the keeper and shot wide. After having left his colleagues and supporters with their hearts in their mouths after some indifferent claiming of crosses, Connett quickly made recompense with a superb save to deny Benyon . Otherwise Vics continued to dominate and it was no more than they deserved when they doubled their advantage. Debutant Beaumont executed a slide rule pass to set ALLAN clear on goal and he drilled the ball beyond Bastock to score Vics' second. Brayson was once again put clear but failed to captalise as Vics went into the break feeling they ought to have had a 4 goal advantage.
Not surprisingly St Albans started the second half with more urgency and McCarthy had to be on his toes to put an end to an early raid. Cracknell then wasted an opportunity by lifting his shot high over the bar before Hann cut inside from the right to have a shot saved by Connett. Vics replied with interest and, after two goal bound shots had been blocked, CARR followed up to make no mistake from 9 yards. St Albans were given a slim lifeline when they were awarded a penalty following a clumsy challenge from Charnock inside the box and CLARKE made no mistake from the spot. But it remained far too little-far too late and Vics eventually ran out winners with consumate ease.
