Vics 0
Man City X1 3 (Miller 38 Sturridge 61 Grimes 70)
Daniel Sturridge gave an early indication of his precocious talent when his effort was eventually denied by a post. Otherwise an entertaining first period had seen Vics have the edge and a youthful Manchester City team were indebted to Kasper Schmeichel for saves that denied Chris Sergeant from a close range header and then he did well to turn a Brayson 20 yard shot around the post. Brayson then fired high and wide after good work from Roca before City took the lead. A slick move involving Kelvin Etuhu left Ishmael MILLER with the simplest of tasks of scoring from close range. Despite Vics best efforts they were restricted by a City defence effectively marshalled by first teamer Onuoha to a final singular effort from Brayson that was again kept out by Schmeichel. Nevertheless a degree of comfort has to be taken by the sight of Michael Carr competing for 45 minutes with the apparent minimum of distress
Steve Burr introduced seven changes at the break and for the opening period Chris Williams in particular posed a more potent threat. Together with Kevin Townson he worked an opening that was inches aaway from bringing his team back on level terms. He then created a half chance for Byrne but his shot sailed high over the bar. It was therefore somewhat ironic that the visitors should effectively seal the game when Vics had otherwise been in the ascendency. Miller was again central to the build up and this time it was left to the impressive STURRIDGE to execute an accomplished finish. The Vics threat gradually faded leaving the Premiership youngsters to continue to stamp their mark on the game. And it took barely a further 9 minutes before they grabbed a third goal. Substitute Ashley GRIMES gained possession 20 yards from goal to cleverly outwit two Vics defenders before clinically directing a shot into the far corner of the net. Scmeichel maintained the family tradition by denying late efforts from Allan and Townson before a Phil Senior save at the death denied Miller from adding to Vics' disappointment.
