Sat 28th October FA CUP 4th Qualifying Round
Vics 2 v 0 Cambridge United
Vics deservedly won the opportunity of an FA Cup First Round tie at Brighton with a display that underlined the value of creativity as opposed to brawn.
The visitors did create the opening chance of the game and Brady was particularly unfortunate to see his early strike rap against the woodwork. Otherwise it was Vics who were showing the more measured approach play and when Brayson appeared to be set clear on goal a cumbersome challenge by Cambridge skipper, and defender, Andy Duncan led to a red card.
Vics suffered a set back of their own when Jonny Allan was stretchered off with a suspected dislocated shoulder to be replaced by Byrne and momentarily they lost control and were grateful to Phil Senior who made two important saves to deny Gash and Hanlon. Normal service was soon resumed and Townson did well to create an opening for substitute Byrne but his shot was blocked out by the keeper.
Brown and Townson combined to set up Brayson and again the Cambridge keeper had to on the top of his game to keep out another Brayson shot.
With Vics dominating proceedings at this stage a breakthrough appeared ever more likely and after Brown had won the ball on the left he passed to Townson and his determination and vision ended with an inch perfect cross that allowed the ever alert BRAYSON to score from close range.
Cambridge replied with a spell of pressure just before and then after the break that produced little other than a clever turn and shot from Wolleaston that Senior was again equal to. From then onwards Vics continued to look the more accomplished team, and after Crichton had been fully stretched to keep out a Mayman free kick, Griffiths got on the end of the subsequent corner to knock a header down inside the box allowing CARR to score from close range.
Vics maintained their dominance to the end and, despite a couple of half chances for Bridges, always looked the more potent team to eventually award their fans with another potentially enjoyable away day, this time on the South Coast.
