Tuesday 15th August 2006 Vics 0 v 2 Morecambe
An early defining moment for this game proved to be a poorly hit penalty from Jonny Allan that provided an all too easy save for Morecambe keeper Steven Drench. The talented Michael TWISS proved to be less accomodating 12 minutes later when he scored from the edge of the box to give the visitors a vital lead. Moments later he could easily have added a second but he scuffed a close range shot into the arms of a grateful Phil Senior. Vics early conviction appeared now to rapidly disappear and although they continued to attempt to dictate the pace of the game they were only able to contrive one further opportunity before the break when a well worked three man move ended with Carr hooking his shot wide.
Morecambe began the second half on the offensive and Danny Carlton
could have immediately secured the points on two separate occassions
when he first shot tamely at Senior with the goal at his mercy and then
failed to connect with a clever Adam Yates cross when unmarked directly
in front of goal. Vics stuck to their task and a comeback always
remained a posssibilty despite a severe lack of creativity. The clearly
frustrated Allan and then Byrne were replaced by Brayson and Roca
without significant effect. And it proved to be the visitors who again
came closest to scoring when Gary Thompson cut inside from the right to
deliver a left foot shot that forced a superb full length save from
Senior. The hoped for late flourish from Vics never really materialised
leaving a very organised Morecambe outfit to sew up the game and record
a rare but deserved win on Cheshire soil in the final minute. And,
following a clinical break, it was again the classy TWISS that gained
possession on the edge of the box to underline his qualities as an
accomplished striker and execute a finish that ultimately proved to be
the defining difference between the two sides.
