Dagenham 5 (Benson 21 29 Southern 39 MacKiell-Smith 77 Sloma 85)
Vics 0
The inadequacy of this perforfance is barely reflected in the scoreline. Believe you me there was a huge gulf in class for all to see in this game and the obvious conclusion is that some of the current Vics squad are not of a sufficient standard to compete at this level.
An early indication of what was to follow was exampled in the opening minutes when Benson waltzed passed Payne with consumate ease only for Connett to cut out his low cross . Charnock made an unforced error that ended with him conceding a free kick that forced a hurried clearance from Payne. Vics did break in style and a quality move involving Brayson and Mayman ended with Allan, playing in a midfield role, drilling a shot narrowly wide. Otherwise Vics looked disjointed and unimpressive and only the latest of challenges from Barwick prevented Mackail-Smith from scoring after he had all too easily skipped beyond two defenders. Almost inevitably a frail and vulnerable Vics defence was breached after 21 minutes when they dealt inadequately with a Saunders corner kick allowing Uddin to head toward the far post where BENSON was on hand to convert. From this point Vics all too easily folded and quickly fell further behind when Mackail-Smith beat Payne with embarassing ease to cross for BENSON to score unchallenged from an elementary header. A rout already seemed on the cards and a poor clearance from the normally reliable Charnock could have ended in further disaster but the return shot from Mackail-Smith was thankfully directed straight at Connett. Worse was to follow and further poor defending allowed an unchallenged cross from the right to be deflected into the net by SOUTHAM.
The half ended with an all too rare Vics attempt that ended with Allan heading wide following good approach play from Barwick and Brayson.
The ever industrious Jonny Allan conjured hopes of a comeback at the beginning of the second half with a shot that flashed narrowly wide but all too quickly the home side continued to find weaknesses in the Vics defence and Benson could have completed his hat trick had he not shot wide having collected another poor headed clearance. Kieran Charnock left the field with a twisted ankle to be replaced by Griffiths and one could not help but feel that matters would now only get worse. To be fair the introduction of Elliott did add some much needed backbone to the side and temporarily they rallied. Byrne had a header saved from an Elliott and Mayman move and then Brown had a goal bound shot deflected wide. Byrne shot narrowly wide from the edge of the box but the comeback proved to be no more than cosmetic. And after Brayson had a shot saved the home side broke through Rainford and he quickly found MACKAIL-SMITH and his shot from the edge of the box squirmed from the grasp of Connett and found its way into the net. Worst was to follow when Connett could only parry a Akurang shot and SLOMA followed up to score. Events could have been even more embarassing after Mayman had brought brought down Akurang inside the box but when he stepped up to take the spot kick Connett was equal to his weak effort.
It has to be said that this was the worst Vics display for some time and they will need to turn things around quickly or else spend the season battling against the prospect of an immediate return to the Conference North.
