VICS DRAW AT HOME TO ALFRETON PDF Print E-mail

Peter Wilson reports on VICS' draw with Alfreton: Vics 1 v 1 Alfreton It would be difficult to deny today that Vics lost the opportunity to re-assert their position as principal promotion candidates against game, but average, opponents. That the Alfreton equalising goal was scored in a less than sporting manner amid controversial circumstances is also irrefutable. But the reality remains that, for two thirds of this game, Vics lacked the composure to break down the stubborn resistance presented before them. An uneventful first half had produced few chances for either team and yet the visitors really ought to have taken the lead when Rankine guided a cross from the left wide of the post with Rogers clearly floundering. Otherwise only a weak finish from Brayson that was all too easily gathered by Raynor provided some encouragement to an increasingly frustrated home crowd. The need to step up their play after the break was quickly recognised by Steve Burr's men and they were denied a vehement penalty claim after Allan appeared to have been grounded by Raynor inside the box. Raynor then saved with an outstretched leg to deny Brayson a certain goal and then a move started by Roca ended with the same player having the ball taken off his toes by the timeliest of tackles from Featherstone when he appeared set to score. Despite being unable to apply consistent pressure the home side gradually began to dominate and Allan twice shot over when well placed. Yet the visitors continued to pose a threat and Godber headed wide when he might have scored and Duffield could only produce a rudimentary save from Rogers despite being well placed. As the game entered its final stages Vics began to press for maximum points and Carr headed marginally wide, Brayson had another penalty appeal turned down and Payne saw his header clawed out by Raynor. With just six minutes remaining the desired outcome appeared to have been achieved by ALLAN when he rose above everyone to head into the corner of the net. That Vics held on to a vital three points was now a priority but a controversial incident served to end that wish just three minutes later. Kris Rogers appeared to have kicked the ball out of play from the comfortable position of being in possession in response to a perceived injury to an Alfreton player. The visitors ignored protocol and set up an attack of their own from the ensuing throw in and DUFFIELD scored with a well-placed shot from the edge of the box. Alfreton went on to hold on for their draw and leave a frustrated and infuriated Steve Burr and his colleagues to become embroiled in a heated and unsavoury incident involving both sets of players at the final whistle.
