Stafford 1 V 1 Vics  (Abandoned after 48 minutes)

Vics looked the more adept for most of the available game on an all too recognisable Marston Road quagmire surface.

Steve Burr rang the changes with Michael Carr slotting into a central defender role and Gallimore moving to left full back. Barwick took his place in central midfield while Battersby replaced Mayman on the right flank and Byrne took over from Roca on the left. Sale replaced Brayson up front.

From the outset Vics looked more comfortable than in recent weeks and a superb move involving McCarthy-Battersby-Sale ended with Allan blasting a shot both high and wide. Byrne, who was taking advantage of the space offered to him on the left, cleverly created an opening for Gallimore but his shot was turned around the post by the home keeper.

Stafford were offering little in response and with the emergency Vics back four looking both confident and comfortable the Vics keeper continued to remain virtually redundant. Byrne continued to be a threat down the left and only a save from the home keeper denied him a goal after Sale again had proved to be an effective provider. Sale went close and then an Allan header from another effective McCarthy cross that was saved at full stretch maintained the pressure that eventually led to a Vics' goal.  Allan and Sale combined to create an opening for BYRNE down the left channel and he quickly steadied himself before firing a precision shot beyond the keeper and inside the post.

At the break the general consensus was that Vics were good value for their lead.

Unfortunately the rain continued and the officials decided to give the game a final chance to continue despite significant areas of the playing surface deteriating under ever increasing volumes of water. Both teams therefore took to the field for a planned second half. that quickly brought the scores level . GRAYSON floated an harmless cross from a free kick into the box leaving the Vics keeper to unimpressively remain static allowing the cross to sail over his head and into the net.

Moments later, and with the playing surface further deteriating the referee was left with no option but to abandon the game.
