GRAVESEND ( 2)3

McDonald 43, 45 (pen) Moore 74

VICS ( 0)0

Att. 1,182 (about 25 from Vics)

Vics started well and were little troubled by Gravesend for the first quarter. After only 5 mins a nice move involving Roberts and Dean presented Byrne with a shot that went just wide. At the other end McDonald forced a comfortable save from Connett in a rare moment of Gravesend danger before Dean went clear just inside the Gravesend half on 17 mins, he carried the ball and shot past the advancing Cronin but it hit the post and came back into play and was cleared. After 20 mins Danny Mayman was injured and replaced by Jon McCarthy. Vics continued to look solid but after 33 mins had a let-off when Connett raced out of his box to try and deal with a ball that was clearly Battersby's and in the resulting confusion Eribenne was presented with a clear shot at the goal but fortunately put it wide.

Like Stafford 2 days earlier suddenly Vics started to fade and that miss was only the start of more Gravesend pressure. 2 mins later Moore went down the right and his cross was beautifully met on the volley by Long, but fortunately flew inches over. Vics finally succumbed 2 mins before the break when a long throw into the box saw Connett choose to stay on his line and McDonald received the ball 8 yards out and made no mistake. As stoppage time started a cross in the bos was headed down and Roberts was adjudged to have handled it and McDonald doubled his, and Gravesend's score, off the penalty. At this point 2 goals may have flattered Gravesend but they were the better team now.

?The second half could only be described as a possible disaster for Vics. It opened OK with Smart setting up a good attempt by Brayson that was deflected and produced an excellent save from Cronin under the bar. However, on 55 mins Carr was stretchered off after a tackle by Ricketts and the early indications from the bench were that it looked like a broken ankle. Roca came on but the game was now lost, Charnock was booked on 68 mins and Roca gave Brayson a chance. Townson replaced Dean on 73 mins but it was sealed a minute later when Keeling went down the left and crossed for Moore, unmarked, to score confidently. Charnock denied McDonald again and in injury time the same player went clear and Connett did well to save.

No quibbles about the result but there can be few at Vics who will be sorry to see the end of this season.
