FIRST DRAW OF THE SEASON FOR VICS PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 10 October 2006

Exeter  1   v   1  VICS

And so we have a draw at last and we should see this as a well earned point.
The side had the look of a makeshift eleven with an emphasis on defence,
although there was the arrival of new striker Dodds to observe.

Basically Exeter were quicker to the ball, got the ball in the air, passed
well, intercepted well and it was fortunate that their finishing was poor
and when they did hit the target - Senior responded well.

But to be fair Vics made up in grit and determination what they lacked in
speed and the fact that we got a point says a lot for some much maligned
players who did their best for the team tonight.

Exeter shaded the first half with plenty of possession but Vics were good on
the break and had perhaps the two clearest chances. After 22 minutes a
great move saw Allan pass to Battersby on the right who beat his man and
his hard cross was collected by Dodds who returned the ball inside to the onrushing  Jonny Allan who hit it well but the ball cannoned off the top of the bar – when perhaps we would have expected him to bury it. Then in the 39th minute Allan had another chance but headed wide after a good cross from Battersby.

Finally a goal came in the 44th minute when Brayson chased a through ball,
outpaced the defence and slipped it past the keeper.

Battersby was then booked in the next attack by a referee who was a little fussy to say the least and he proceeded to fill his notebook as the game wore on, mainly for clumsy rather than malicious challenges.

All the good work in the first half was undone in a moment of madness 3minutes
into the second half when for the only time in the game the defence was
guilty of watching the play and from a long clearance the ball went right
through to Phillips who tapped in the equaliser.

Townson replaced Dodds after 63minutes and 5 minutes later Barwick was
replaced by McCarthy just after being booked.

Vics were not attacking much now and it was death or glory stuff -Elliott
was booked after 75minutes and McCarthy after 82minutes.

Elliott did have a last hurrah with 5minutes to go but he delayed too long and
the chance was gone.

Vics: Senior; Battersby; Gallimore; Griffiths; Elliott; Allan; Brayson; Payne;
Brown; Dodds and Barwick

Subs Connett; Byrne; McCarthy; Sale and Townson

Man of the Match  -Senior who made some good saves and couldn’t be
blamed for the goal.

Attendance was 2928 (with 31 from Vics)
