Vics 2 v 0 Forest Green Rovers
On the back of two hard earned cup victories Vics produced another resolute display to grind out an important and deserved result.
Under the auspices of the wily Jimmy Harvey the visitors were always going to be a difficult nut to crack, but Steve Burr and Dave Moss had obviously done their homework and, in the end, their game plan proved to be the superior tactic.
A keenly contested first half had provided little to choose between two well-organised outfits. And when the visitors had breached the Vics rearguard Ben Connett had proved himself more than equal to the task with a litany of quality saves. He was first called to account by a well-struck Simon Clist shot that he did superbly well to parry. Vics responded with a cleverly constructed move involving rookies Beaumont and Smart that eventually ended with a panicked clearance from in front of the visitors goal. Connett again exhibited his developing expertise by producing an outstanding save to block a wicked and unpredictable deflection from a Lawless shot. On the stroke of half time the lively Clist was on hand to hook a shot carelessly wide.
The vital contribution of keeper Connett was again underlined by another spectacular save that denied Brough from giving the visitors an early second half lead before he repeated the exercise to thwart Rigoglosio with another match winning save. The resolve of the keeper and all his colleagues was soon to be rewarded. Brayson, not for the first time showing himself to be the most skilful forward on view, engineered enough space for himself down the right channel to deliver a low cross that Darren JONES could only vainly deflect into his own net.
Having gotten themselves in front it was immediately clear that Vics were determined not to cede their advantage. As a unit Vics continued to defend effectively and, as the visitors looked to press for an equalising goal, began to pose an ever-increasing threat themselves on the break. Dean went close on two occasions before Michael Carr was ludicrously shown a second yellow card and intimately a red card. A first half caution seemed harsh but when that was followed by a second booking for another innocuous challenge that seemed to bely all expectancy of common sense. Yet Vics, in keeping with their overall display, stuck ruggedly to their task and eventually secured maximum points when DEAN persisted admirably to take advantage of an attempted Robinson clearance to score from close range.
