Peter Grimes reports on how VICS made it a fabulous 14 wins on the trot: REDDITCH 1 v 1 VICS As a game this one won't be remembered for its flowing football and excitement!! On a bone hard sloping pitch with a strong corner-to-corner wind both teams struggled with the high bounce and high balls in particular and neither side mastered the art of passing on the day. Neither side created much in a dull first 20 minutes. An excellent tackle by Hollis denied Allan a shot at the expense of a corner and from the kick Allan shot over the bar. An Elliott free kick fell to Allan but his shot within the 6yd box was blocked. At the other end the giant centre forward, May, had the ball at his feet in the box for what seemed an age before he was eventually crowded out. Vics should have gone ahead on 20 minutes when a Battersby and Carr combined to put Brayson clear but he shot past the far post. It was an expensive miss as Redditch broke well on their next attack and scored direct from a Hollis wind assisted corner. Rogers made amends a minute later being out quick to clear from May and saving a shot from Palmer close to half time. Vics were struggling against a Redditch side that deserved some credit for playing to their strengths and keeping it simple, albeit it without looking like increasing their score. Just into stoppage time Vics gained an equalizer that they may not have deserved at that time. A free kick from Elliott was headed goal wards by Carr, blocked on the line and Payne gleefully hammered it in from 6yards. There was no time for a sigh of relief as virtually from the kick off Redditch attacked down the right and 2 Vics defenders and Rogers came for the ball to the left edge of the area, Rogers missed his punch and left all 3 stranded, the ball was put quickly back into the box towards the unguarded net and in a mad scramble to either get back or score Palmer saw his goal bound shot hit centre forward May, on the ground, and go wide! At the start of the second half Sale replaced McCarthy. We played better with the advantage of the wind uphill and the speed of Brayson and Williams looked as if it could be the difference. However, with 60 minutes gone Redditch had their best spell of he game. A quick ball into the box saw Charnock make a great tackle to deny Adams. A minute later the same player had a free header at the back post and it went off Rogers legs for a corner. Off the kick the ball went in but the ref blew for a foul on Rogers. Vics were looking distinctly uneasy and giving their fans little confidence that things could get better. To our great relief we went in front with a massive slice of luck on 65 minutes. Williams received the ball on the right, beat his defender and pulled back a fast low cross that beat keeper Anstiss and defender Taylor produced a diving header right into his own net from 5 yards out. Within a minute May had forced Rogers to tip a shot over and then headed high off the resultant corner. It was almost the home sides last serious effort as they faded after that and Vics looked more comfortable if not completely at ease. Redditch pushed another man forward leaving space at the back but apart from an Allan shot we never troubled Anstiss again. Redditch had a last ditch charge as we went into stoppage time. Adams got the ball in space in the box but shot across goal and a May shot was blocked close in for a corner. Everyone came up, including the keeper but Vics held on. Man of the match Keiron Charnock
