Peter Wilson reports on another fine win for VICS: Hyde United 1 v 3 Vics With an abundance of determination and skill Vics overpowered arguably one of the most improved teams in the league and, at the same time, made amends for the disappointing reversal on their home ground against the Tameside outfit back in early February to record a deserved and important win. The quality and fluency of Vics passing caused the Tigers problems from the start. Garner won the ball on the left to find Williams and his shot produced a full stretch save from Ndjebay low down to his left. Mayman had a shot deflected for a corner and from the kick Elliott drove inches over the bar. And so the home side could have few complaints when Mayman again did well down the right to produce a cross from which CARR ghosted into the box to score from 6 yards. Mayman and Williams combined to set up Byrne but his shot curled wide of the target. Then Vics produced yet another free flowing move that was rewarded with the goal that it deserved. Charnock won the ball in defence and found Byrne who swept a pass to Mayman and when Brayson cleverly dummied another astute cross from the Vics winger BYRNE followed up to convert from close range. At this stage it appeared that Vics were heading for a comprehensive victory that would emphatically improve their goals difference. Yet experience dictates that any side put out by Steve Waywell are not going to give in without a fight and that proved to be the case. Dale Johnson had a shot saved and then Mark Quayle, in probably his only significant contribution against his former club, blasted high and wide from the edge of the box. The irony was that it was from another marauding Vics attack that ended with goal bound shots from Handyside and Byrne being blocked that Hyde broke to reduce the arrears. With the Vics rearguard retreating Nicky CLEE was allowed to advance unchallenged to the edge of the box from where he neatly tucked his shot beyond Rogers and inside the far post. What had been a one sided contest became a much closer affair, although Brayson came close to reaffirming the two goal deficit just before the break with a decent shot that had an erratic Hyde keeper scrambling to save. Vics began the second half minus the services of Kieran Charnock, who had been struggling from the effects of a virus, leaving Steve Payne to deputise. Hyde continued to try and claw their way back into the game and Vics were indebted to Byrne who cleared a Mike Flynn header from off his goal line. In the main though Vics defended with aplomb and remained a threat on the break. From one such instance Brayson went clear but in attempting to lob the keeper only succeeded in presenting him with the most comfortable of saves. Williams almost shaped another opening for Brayson but German stretched to divert his pass away from the lurking Vics forward in front of a gaping goal. As the game progressed and Vics defence remained solid the home side began to run out of steam and when the excellent Richard Battersby again broke up a Hyde move to move forward menacingly the ball eventually ran free to CARR whose shot from the edge of the box took a cruel deflection to leave the keeper helpless and tie up maximum points for the Vics. There was still time for Williams to guide an Elliott cross wide of a gaping goal and for Battersby to embark on a final run that ended with a cross that only needed a Vics player to get on the end of and score the simplest of tap ins. All the Vics team can take great credit for sticking so effectively to their task today and most particularly: Danny Mayman, Richard Battersby and Matt Garner who have not always been regular team members but again showed their value to the squad.
