Peter Grimes reports on a ninth successive win for VICS: MOOR GREEN 1 V 2 VICS This was not a game that will live in the memory! However, the important thing was the result and this win keeps Vics right on the heels of Stafford. A strong wind made control difficult for both teams and neither passed consistently well all afternoon. Vics started brightly and keeper Timms made heavy weather of a long Elliott shot in the third minute to gave away a corner. A second followed soon afterwards but no real danger ensued. Moor Green went ahead on 7 minutes thanks to sloppy defending by Vics and quick reactions by ex-Vics loan player Dale Anderson. The right side of our defence was slow to defend and a low cross was only half gathered by Rogers and as it rolled free there was Anderson to blast it home from 8 yards. Moor Green sensed an opportunity to extend their 8 match unbeaten run and nearly made it 2-0 5 minutes later but Rogers dived at the feet of Anderson just as he received the ball in space and shaped to shoot. Vics struggled to find any rhythm and their only early effort of note was a shot on the turn by Allan, which Timms went full length to save. More poor defending by Vics saw Morrison given time to run at Rogers but he shot too early and it went high and wide. Vics improved towards half time without reaching the standards we have become used to and Allan put Williams away on the left, he carried the ball towards goal but Timms was out quickly to block the shot at the expense of a corner. McPhee shot narrowly wide at the other end and Vics went in for half time knowing they could not complain at being behind. The first action of the second half saw Vics level. With 4 minutes gone we won a corner on the right. It was played short to Brayson who played it back to Garner and his deep cross found Handyside right on the corner of the 6yd box and goal line. Without thinking he hooked it back over his head, and over the keeper at the near post and the wind carried it into the far corner. Brilliant shot or poor centre? You will need to ask Peter Handyside that one! On the hour Williams was again 1 on 1 with keeper Timms but his low shot rolled inches wide of the far post. The game did not improve in quality and, thankfully, Moor Green looked devoid of attacking ideas and willing to settle for a point. Just when it looked as if Vics might do the same we had our now regular grandstand finish. Sale and Byrne replaced Elliott and Williams and Sale nearly won it with 5 minutes left when he shot straight at keeper Timms with only him to beat. Vics luck held though, and with 3 minutes left a cross from the left by Byrne was once again carried in quickly by the wind and Carr and Petty went up for the ball and Petty glanced it past his own keeper into the net. No team plays well all season and Vics have used up a bit of their good fortune today. However, to be fair they never looked like losing it in the second half (as much as you can say that at 1-1) and if you keep going right to the end then you make your own luck.
