TNS 0 Saturday 6th August 2005 Friendly Vics 1 (Allan 21) TNS 0

TNS provided the stiff opposition that the Champions of Wales and European Champions League competitors would be expected to provide but Vics ran out worthy winners to complete their pre-season itinery.

Despite kicking into a strong wind, Vics had the better of the early exchanges and after Payne had shot wide Chapman and Allan combined effectively to force a hurriedly conceded corner. Yet it was the visitors who came closest to scoring when a poor attempted header back to his keeper from McCarthy had left Michael Wilde with only the keeper to beat but Rogers proved equal to the task and pulled off a superb save to push the firmly hit shot around his post. Vics returned to the offensive to take a 21st minute lead. McCarthy quickly atoned for his error by solidly winning the ball in his own half to drive forward and split the TNS defence with a measured pass which set ALLAN clear on goal and, although Doherty kept out his original shot, the persistant Vics forward lifted the rebound over the head of the keeper and into the net despite laying prone on the ground. McCarthy again won a challenge to move forward with purpose and this time he set Brayson clear to set up Byrne but his finish was saved by Doherty low down to his right. Wilde headed a free kick on for Steve Evans to have a header saved but it was still Vics who looked the more threatening and Chapman, having his best game so far, had a 25 yard shot saved by Doherty. A free kick from Brayson beat the keeper but sadly also the upright by a whisker. Chapman misjudged a header to let in Steven Beck but the impressive left back recovered to execute the perfect tackle to concede a corner kick. Another measured pass from McCarthy split the Welsh defence to set Allan clear but he shot weakly at the keeper. Brayson then found himself clear on goal but instead of executing the finish himself he attempted to set up Byrne to his left and only succeeded in finding the keeper. A Byrne free kick defeated everyone in the box and the far post by the narrowest of margins and then the same player did well to work an opening for himself but his finish lacked conviction at the end of. arguably, Vics best 45 minutes of the pre-season.

Sadly they were unable to sustain the momentum for much of the second half and after Byrne had again done well to work an opening he was again let down by a weak finish. Beck missed TNS's best chance of the game when he lifted a shot high and wide with only Rogers to beat and the game appeared to be ambling to a conclusion until Burr introduced Chris Gaghan for the final 10 minutes. The former Barnton winger had a shot from the edge of the box deflected onto the top of the cross bar, cleverly set up Battersby whose final shot was saved and finally had another goalbound shot deflected for a corner as Vics ended, as they had shown in the first half , the side most capable of creating and converting chances. Chapman looked like he may make the left back berth his own and Payne and Charnock were outstanding at the heart of a dominant Vics defence and Jonny Allan looks to have gotten back into the habit of scoring to generally boost confidence for the coming campaign.
