Vics progressed in the FA Cup following their 1-0 home win over North Ferriby and Peter Wilson reports:
Vics had to endure one or two anxious moments late in the game before they were eventually able to progress further in the FA Cup and credit must be given to their Unibond Premier League opponents for pushing them all the way.
A torrential pre-match downpour of rain ensured that conditions were always going to be difficult and a greasy surface was proving a barrier to the kind of free flowing football that Vics prefer. Nonetheless Michael Carr might have opened the scoring when he ghosted in unmarked at the far post but directed a shot wide of a gaping goal. The visitors produced a slick move of their own involving Thompson and Hartley leaving Wainman to shoot wide of the near post. Roca worked an opening for Allan to have a shot deflected over the bar and Rogers needed two attempts to keep out a Price free kick before Botham was sent clear by Hockles but his angled shot was wide of the far post. Otherwise the Vics approach play often broke down culminating in a poor cross or inadequate delivery and it was Rogers who was again asked the only other serious question of the opening half when he saved from Wainman.
North Ferriby's willingness to shoot at every given opportunity looked set to be a key feature of the second half with Rogers doing well to keep out long range shots from Bolder and Hockles as the ball skidded threateningly off the wet, greasy surface. Yet, when Vics needed it the most, BRAYSON provided the inspiration and produced the finish to score the winner which earned a place in the next round. He latched onto a long ball forward to outpace the visitors defence and delcately lob the advancing keeper Paul Sharp to score the match winning goal. Far from laying down, North Ferriby then took the game to Vics and Hartley and Lightowler both went close enough to cause concerns. Allan almost ended a four man move in style but his shot was turned over the bar by Sharp. Carr headed against the bar before Allan headed against the inside of the post from 4 yards, when he really ought to have sewn the game up, to leave a nail biting final ten minutes. But Botham shot narrowly wide and Rogers kept out a late Fothergill effort to ensure that all, to concerted huge sighs of relief, ended well.(PW)
