Peter Wilson reports on Vics second home defeat in five days:
Vics 0 v 1 Worcester
A combination of inept defending and a lack of creativity and vision was a certain recipe for disaster and that was the outcome from another game that only served to continue to underline Vics' ever-decreasing prospects from what initially appeared to be such a promising season.
Today's approach play was an improvement on recent games and Allan asked early questions of the visiting defence that required a brave dash from his goal from McDonnell and then he forced a hurried clearance following another typical forage down the right. Yet despite the best efforts of Allan, Vics continued to look vulnerable at the back and Rogers had to be on his toes to keep out two efforts from Thompson before the lively Danks shot wide from a promising position.
Devlin left the field of play early to be replaced by Dale Anderson and Allan dropped back to midfield and almost immediately engineered an opening for himself but his finish ended frustratingly wide. But it was Worcester, all too familiarly recently, who took the lead when Allan conceded a free kick which again was poorly defended leaving THOMPSON to follow up and score.
A Vics response was immediate and the outstanding Allan set up Brayson and with only the keeper to beat, a chance that he would have buried a few weeks ago, ended with an illustration of his recent dip in form when a weak finish rolled wide of the target.
Roca worked himself an immediate opening at the start of the second half that was saved by McDonnell and then Vics' most outstanding player by the proverbial mile, Jonny Allan, shot narrowly over from 25 yards. Yet the visitors should have sewn the game up moments later when a Handyside mistake left Wedgebury clear on goal and although he rounded Rogers he shot wide of an empty goal. Burr introduced Sale and Byrne in an attempt to capitalise and both were quickly involved with Sale having a shot blocked and Byrne having a shot virtually shave the post. Vics did then temporarily build up a head of steam and Allan was desperately unlucky to see his left foot strike rap the post with the keeper comprehensively beaten. But just as frustratingly they were unable to sustain quality pressure and fairly quickly they adopted an ever growing desperate and ill thought approach. And in the end it was left to Danks to once again effectively ask a rare question of either keeper with a shot that required a save from Rogers.
