Peter Grimes reports on the game at Barrow:
BARROW 1 v VICS 1
Vics will see this as 2 points dropped given the difference in the teams before half time when we could easily have been 2 or 3 goals ahead. The second half, however, was end to end and Barrow deserved their equalizer.
The game got off to a niggly start when Allan was fouled 3 times in the opening 5 minutes, a pattern that continued throughout the game and to which Vics responded at times. Referee Webb should have clamped down much earlier but missed a lot, made wrong decisions and let too much go. Brayson could have taken this early sting out of the game had he converted a chance from 8 yards but he shot wildly over after a free kick had been headed back across the box to him. On 17 mins Allan got a yellow when he finally retaliated with a silly foul at a time when Vics were dominant, a situation that was to last the whole half. Brayson put in a powerful shot close to goal off a Mayman cross only to see keeper Bishop make a splendid reaction save that rebounded back so quickly to Brayson that he couldn't connect properly and scuffed his shot wide with Bishop on the floor. Barrow's first shot at goal came on 30 minutes but went well wide. Soon after Cotterill cleared off the line and Brayson's quick shot was deflected for a corner. Carr came close having gone right through the middle but the inevitable goal finally came on 38 mins. A Chapman cross finally found its way to Brayson about 12 yards out beyond the corner of the 6yd box and he turned and volleyed a beauty into the far corner. Just before the break Bishop made another excellent save from a Brayson free kick and from the ensuing corner Barrow eventually scrambled it clear.
Vics went in at half time looking comfortable and with the crowd seeing nowhere from where a Barrow goal could come! Nothing could be further from the truth as it happened. Barrow attacked from the whistle and had 3 shots blocked in the box by Vics defenders in the first 2 minutes. They replaced Hill with Rushton and continued to worry Vics. Tarrant went close and Kyle Wilson (Phil Wilson's son) produced a diving fingertip save from Rogers. Heffernan then volleyed narrowly wide. In that opening 10 mins Vics only effort had been a run and shot from Carr that went just over. Vics then had 2 good chances in 2 mins to seal it, first Brayson was clear 1 on 1 with Bishop but the keeper blocked it from a Mayman cross Carr got in at the near post but shot just wide. At the other end Rogers saved at he feet of Wilson and the same player side footed wide a cross from Rushton. Vics were now losing the midfield battle but no substitutions came until the last 20 mins when Battersby and Devlin replaced Roca and Mayman. Unfortunately the new formation had no time to settle before McCarthy brought down Wilson and Heffernan's powerful penalty gave Rogers no chance. The nearest Vics came to scoring after that was at the wrong end when a communication mix-up between Rogers and Chapman saw the full back get a touch to a through ball just as Rogers bent to pick it up. It deflected it towards goal but Chapman recovered quickly and just got back to scoop it away.
No disrespect to Barrow who came at us well in the second half, but Vics had the skill and class to have had this game wrapped up before the break, not for the first time this season, but didn't deliver. In the end we couldn't complain at the home team getting their equaliser. We lost it in midfield and struggled against another physical team. It's another reminder that there is still a lot to be done if we want to be champions and that there may be a need to strengthen the squad.
