Vics 3 (Allan 14 McCarthy 76 Brayson 90)
Kettering 1 (Burgess 69)
Kettering provided Vics with their sternest test so far this season but they responded admirably to seal what may turn out to be a very significant win.
And it was Jonny ALLAN who paved the way with a well taken goal from a close range header after Brayson had scooped a Mayman cross into his path. Allan again went close with a header from a Mayman corner before a misunderstanding between Dink and Brown let in Brayson but his left foot shot cleared the bar. In an open game play switched quickly and Moore got behind the Vics defence to get clear on goal but Rogers dashed from his line to complete a brave save at the strikers feet. Elliott had a shot saved and then Brayson broke clear but opted to attempt to find Allan instead of applying the finish himself allowing Brown to make a hurried and fortuitous clearance. Play reverted and Gould flashed a shot narrowly wide of the post before Roca broke down to the opposite end to have his shot take a viscious deflection which Osborne did well to save, albeit with the aid of the cross bar. Kettering enjoyed a short spell in the ascendency at the end of an even first half and Solkhon sh
ot wide from 28 yards.
Junior McDougald had an early shot easily saved after the break before the visitors made two early sustitutions. Then, just nine minutes into the half, Kettering had Christian Moore controversially sent off for what could only have been an off the ball incident. Ironically their reduction to ten men seemed to spur the visitors and they enjoyed their best passage of play with Solkhon shooting wide and then setting Hall clear down the right and from his teasing cross Difante was centimetres away from connecting while directly in front of goal. Brayson picked out Mayman and he drove inches over the bar before Kettering clawed their way back into the game with an equalising goal. Ollie BURGESS gained possession to move forward purposefully and strike a 20 yard shot wide of Rogers and into the corner of the net. Chapman and Roca created a response from which Carr shot over before Byrne replaced Roca only to be booked for his first contribution to the game, a badly timed tackle. Go
od interplay between Brayson and Mayman ended with the keeper doing well to save Mayman's deflected shot at the second attempt. With 14 minutes remaining Vics regained the lead and the initiative when Kettering failed to clear an Allan cross leaving McCARTHY to squeeze a shot inside the post. From this point on Vics could have scored four or five more had it not been for the outstanding Osborne. He did well to beat out a Brayson shot from his near post after Handyside had split the Kettering defence with an incisive pass and then from the corner Allan headed onto the top of the bar. Osborne then pulled off a spectacular double save to keep out an initial shot from Brayson only to deny the Allan follow up with another remarkable stop. Mayman and Carr were unable to make the most of further opportunities and Brayson had another shot saved before he produced another piece of individual artistry to score the final goal. BRAYSON collected the ball in the left hand corner of the b
ox before deliberately shifting sideways allowing the widening of the angle and then curled the precisest of shots into the far top corner of the net giving the keeper no chance to react - a quality goal from a quality player.
