Peter Wilson reports on VICS progress in the Fa Trophy:
Vics finally recorded their first win against Hucknall to move into the next round of the FA Trophy and few could argue that it was no more than they had deserved over the difficult two ties.
Hucknall did their best to frustrate Vics once again throughout this tie but in the end Steve Burr's team's greater ability proved to be the defining factor and justice was finally seen to be done.
Vics dominated all the early excahanges and deservedly took a 17th minute lead when Byrne, Brayson and Mayman combined effectively to allow ALLAN the opportunity to loop a header over Lindley and into the net. Gill did reply with a decent effort which went narrowly wide but it was Vics who continued to dominate and Brayson and Allan again combined effectively to leave Byrne to extract another save from Lindley. Mayman then set up Allan but the busy Hucknall keeper again came to their rescue before Hucknall grabbed an equaliser against the run of play. McCarthy conceded a free kick on the left and nobody picked up SUCHAREWYCZ and he scored with an unchallenged far post header. Lindley again proved the saviour for the visitors with a vital double save to deny Allan and then Mayman.
The second half continued with Vics dominant and Lindley providing the main opposition with yet another save to deny Allan. Byrne did well to get to the byline but his angled shot just failed to make the target and although Ward went close with a follow up shot from a deflected free kick Hucknall seemed more content to frustrate Vics than adopt a positive approach themselves. Byrne again had a shot saved until Vics were finally rewarded for their far more enterprising approach by the winning goal. And it was the kind of individual brilliance that underlined the differnce in attitude between the two sides, BRAYSON colected the ball 25 yards from goal and breezed beyond two defenders before collecting himself to measure a shot beyond the seemingly impregnable Lindley and into the far corner of the net. Ricketts did send a late header wide and Rogers was called upon to complete a vital double save to deny Ward but frankly anything other than a Vics win would have been a traversty and an inappropriate vindication of the spoiling tactics Hucknall seem committed to employing.
