Peter Grimes reports on another fine win for VICS: 2-0 reflected the game well, but it was a comfortable victory apart from the first 15 minutes of the second half and a final Hinckley flurry at the end. Vics opened well and for the first half hour their quick passing from the midfield utilizing, the speed of their forwards, showed the visitors limitations and it was no surprise when Vics went ahead on 11 minutes. Several quick raids had already stretched Hinckley when Carr played a lovely ball along the ground right through the middle and into the path of Allan as he went clear. He had to do little except steer it past the oncoming Heystead. Possession was about equal for that half hour but there was little threat from the visitors whereas Vics always looked dangerous. However, the game seemed to go to sleep for the last 15 minutes apart from Hinckley's best effort of the half when a goal bound shot from Cartwright through a crowded area was deflected wide by one of his own players. Vics countered right on half time when a lovely run down the left touchline by Williams saw his low centre beat the keeper before Heeley booted it clear with Allan close. At the break the biggest danger to Vics looked as if it could be complacency. Hinckley came out a more motivated and physical side and for the first time looked like they could score. After only 2 minutes a low centre saw Shilton toe poke a 6 yard shot from right between 2 hesitant Vics defenders but, fortunately, straight at Rogers. Soon afterwards another right wing cross saw the same player head down into the 6-yard box but with no colleague there to finish. Vics only reply at this point was a lovely pass by Carr to Brayson who only had Haystead to beat, the keeper blocked the first shot and turned the shot off the rebound round the post. The game was becoming niggly now, particularly between Lavery on the one hand and Carr and Allan on the other. It seemed obvious that Lavery had been told to beef things up and it was working. Elliott appeared to dish out some justice for a 'foul' the ref had missed and was promptly booked and replaced soon afterwards by Sale. Right on the hour a Hinkley free kick was headed on for Brown to run through the defence and head on to the bar and over. Roca then replaced Brayson and the second goal, which had looked less likely in the second half came on 70 minutes. Yet another free kick was conceded just inside the Hinckley half and McCarthy sent it deep where Williams lost his marker and jumped, unchallenged, to head inside the far post. That took the steam out of Hinckley and the game and Vics coasted home until the final minutes. However, on 89 minutes Brown headed just over and deep into stoppage a speculative shot from well out by Lewis hit the bar. Official man of the match Peter Handyside.
