Vics 2 (Allan 9 Brayson 60)
Gainsborough 0 Report by Pete WilsonImage

A workman like, rather than spectacular, performance brought a comfortable first league victory at the Victoria Stadium on this historical night.

The Greens dominated from the start and quickly took the lead when ALLAN scored with a shot from just outside the box after the visitors defence had obligingly backed off and opened up to give him room to pick his spot. Byrne, Brayson and Allan combined to set up Battersby but his finish was disappointing and then a blistering shot from Carr flew narrowly wide of the upright. Charnock had the ball in the net with a header from a nicely flighted Byrne free kick but unfortunately the "goal" was ruled out for offside. The half, which Vics had totally dominated, ended with a superb move involving Brayson, Carr and Battersby leading to Allan sliding the ball agonisingly wide of the far post.

All expectations were that they would go on to build on their supremacy and record an emphatic victory on this occassion of the first league game to be played at their new ground. The reality was that they lost their way for the opening 15 minutes of the second half and a better side might well have punished them. As it was Gainsborough could only manage efforts by Steadman, Marcelle and Caudwell which all failed to require any action from Rogers. And, on the hour, Vics were gifted a goal in the most extraordinary of circumstances to effectively tie up the game. The gentlest of back passes to the keeper seemed to require the simplest of tasks to boot clear and yet Holshaw opted to back pedal toward his goal line as he wound himself up to attempt the kick and then, as he finally began to execute the kick, he slipped and only succeeded in clipping the ball 3 yards into the body of BRAYSON who side footed into the goal. Normal service was then resumed and a flowing move involving Elliott and Allan ended with Brayson having a shot turned around the post by Holshaw. Elliott had a powerful free kick deflect off Reeves for a corner and then Brayson neatly turned his marker to drill a shot narrowly wide. Brayson was beginning to show his form of the latter end of last season and worked himself another opening only to be denied by another Holshaw save. In sharp contrast when Trinity did work an opening they failed to test Rogers on each occassion. Wood did finally force an academic save from Rogers but from it Vics broke and Holshaw was made to produce something far more demanding when he turned the shot from Allan around the post. Wood again tried his luck but failed to find the target before the game ended with Brayson firing narrowly wide.
