Vics 2 (Allan 38 Brayson 70)
Barrow 0
Following a closely contested first half Vics swept their potential promotion rivals aside with a convincing second half performance and would have won by a far wider margin but for the heroics of Barrow keeper Simon Bishop.
Much of the first half involved cat and mouse play with neither keeper seriously tested after Rogers had turned an early long range shot around his post. Neill Tarrant and Michael Rankine had combined well on occassions without an end product and all Vics efforts had produced similar results until Allan scored the opening goal. Elliott pinpointed a 38th minute 30 yard freekick for ALLAN to score with another perfectly placed header. Barrow did engineer a chance on the stroke of half time with a quicky taken throw in that left Knight clear on goal but he toepoked his attempt wide of both the advancing Rogers and the goal.
Rankine wasted Barrow's best chance of the game when he tamely headed a Flitcroft cross wide of a gaping goal from barely 4 yards. Anthony, in keeping with his colleagues, again failed to find the target after Vics had struggled to clear a Maxfield free kick before Vics took virtual control of the game. Allan headed on for Brayson to have a shot parried by Bishop. Then Mayman, who had replaced Battersby, broke effectively to set up Brayson and after Bishop pulled off a superb save to keep out his shot he did doubly well to block out the Allan follow up shot. From the Byrne corner Allan headed down for Carr but he directed his effort wide from 4 yards. As Vics' momentum continued to gather Allan and Brayson combined for Byrne to have a low cross saved by Bishop. But the Barrow keeper was eventually beaten for a second time by a move and finish of sheer class. The impressive Byrne broke, not for the first time, intelligently to release an inch perfect pass to set BRAYSON clear and he adroitly side stepped the keeper to crash the ball into the net. By now Barrow had been reduced to chasing shadows and Mayman skipped passed a defender on the left to pinpoint a cross for Byrne to head inches over the bar. Carr and Brayson went close and Rogers contributed toward earning his wages with a late dash from his line to save at the feet of Wilford. But by this time Barrow had been comprehensibly beaten as Vics randomly cut their defence to shreds.
