Peter Wilson reports on VICS 4-1 win over Workington: Less than thirty seconds into the game and Matthew BERKELEY latched onto a good parried save by Rogers from a Steve Birks attempt to open the scoring and provide Vics with a feeling of deja vu from their all too recent humiliating experience at Workington. That the same, or a similar, outcome seemed likely was quickly dismissed by a determined effort by the Vics as they took control of the game. Enjoying the majority of possession Vics began to exert growing pressure on their opponents and Brayson went close with an angled shot from the left. Workington gave a timely reminder of their potential threat by Hopper having a shot deflected into the home goal side netting. Yet a determined and focused Vics refused to be denied and they got themselves back on level terms with a typically quality goal. The two most improved players in the current squad, Battersby and Mayman, again worked impressively together to deliver a near post cross for the ever alert CARR to move onto and guide beyond the Workington keeper at the near post. Barely three minutes later and Chris Williams gained possession on the left and showed admirable patience and purpose before engineering an opening for a precision cross from Brayson that was met firmly at the far post by ALLAN to score with an assured header. The visitors again provided a reminder of their potential threat before the break but again Rogers proved equal to the task by denying Birks with his outstretched legs. Mayman did not come out for the second period and Garner took his place moving to left back while McCarthy moved into midfield, as did Jonny Allan, leaving Brayson to move forward into a more accustomed attacking role. Vics enjoyed an early escape with Rogers at full stretch to keep out a May free kick but as the game progressed Workington looked less and less capable of breaking down a solid Vics rearguard and after another Rogers save denied Johnson the Vics began to regain the initiative. Battersby and McCarthy combined to leave Brayson to lob onto the roof of the net before the points were eventually secured with seven minutes remaining. Chris Williams collected the ball on the left and delivered a cross of exact weight and measure that allowed BRAYSON to score unchallenged on the volley from eight yards. The impressive Williams was again involved in the final goal when he chased a long ball down the right channel to draw the keeper and then cut the ball back to the waiting Brayson whose only barrier to finishing the move with a goal was Hopper and he opted to stop the shot on the goal line with his outstretched hand. Inevitably Hopper was red carded and ALLAN stepped up to score from the spot. Attendance: 729 Man of the match: Chris Williams [
