Monday August 29th 2005
Vics 5 (Carr 4 Payne 9 Allan 46 Brayson 72 pen Byrne 90)
Redditch 1 (Williams 62)
Vics brushed a side Redditch with consumate ease to record their fourth consecutive victory and head the Conference North table. More worrying for their rivals maybe that, arguably, they have still to achieve the consistency of performance that the quality of the squad merits. In short, there is much more to come.
Today they got off to the start that they had hoped for with the irresistable Michael CARR scoring a 4th minute opener with a header from a Brayson cross. And barely 5 minutes later Steve PAYNE took advantage of some indifferent goalkeeping from a Mayman corner to repeat the act. Roca won a corner on the left and from the kick Elliott curled a shot inches over the bar. Charnock should have done better with a close range header from an Elliott free kick before John Williams mustered an attempt on goal for the visitors, albeit narrowly wide. The half ended with Redditch again proving vulnerable to set pieces but Charnock was once again wayward with his header from a good position.
Vics sewed up the game sixty seconds from the restart with the impressive Roca breaking to thread a pass for ALLAN to move into the box and score with ease. Vics were at this stage creating openings at will. A superb four man move ended with a weak Mayman finish and then Brayson, Carr and Mayman combined to win a corner from which Charnock again headed wide. Roca then won a corner down the left from which Carr had a header tipped over the bar by Ryan Young. Suddenly, and just as dramatically, Vics went off the boil and Redditch began to make a belated impact on the game. Chris Murphy brought a good save from Rogers and Williams got the better of Payne to set up Murphy but again Rogers did well to block before completing a superb double save to keep out the Williams follow up shot. Yet WILLIAMS refused to be denied and in the 62nd minute he glanced a Charlton free kick beyond Rogers to reduce the deficit. Doyle then went close with an header as Vics appeared to have lost the
ir way. But Carlos Roca had other ideas and when he broke from the half way line in typical fashion he worked his way to the edge of the box to unleash a shot which had "goal" written all over it until it evaded the far post by a whisker. Elliott then swept a pass wide to the little winger and he darted into the box only to be hauled back by Clarke leaving the referee to award a penalty kick. BRAYSON stepped up to make no mistake from the spot. Roca again looked to have broken clear but Doyle did exceptionally well to get back and make a clean saving tackle. Moments later Roca, apparently having suffered a knock, left the field to a standing ovation. He was replaced by Byrne and he quickly set up Elliott to have a shot saved. Craig Wilding came on as a substitute for Redditch and should have scored with his first touch but shot straight at Rogers from 3 yards. Vics immediately switched play and Brayson sent an inch perfect cross to the unmarked Allan but he headed over from
5 yards. Byrne continued to be in the thick of things and after he brought a save from Young with a shot from the edge of the box another flowing move involving Mayman and Allan left Byrne clear on goal but again Young completed the save. But the youngster was not to be denied and when Allan had a stoppage time shot parried by Young the determined BYRNE was on hand to score from the rebound and complete the rout.
