Peter Grimes reports on an excellent one nil win for VICS over Stalybridge: NORTHWICH 1 V 0 STALYBRIDGE As expected this was a much tougher test than the previous 2 games and Vics had the run of the green at the right time to clinch an important victory. The teams were well matched with little in it at any stage of the game. Stalybridge had the better of the first half and Vics the second. Ex-Vics players Steve Garvey and particularly Mark Barnard had good games for the visitors. The first half saw Celtic have the best of the possession and look the more dangerous. They dominated the first 20 minutes but apart from a diving save by Rogers to push a free kick just around the post their pressure never turned into clear chances. Good defensive work by Vics held the back firm despite losing McCarthy after 20 minutes with what looked like his hamstring injury again. Vics came more into it as the half wore on but apart from Barnard clearing a Brayson cross from under the bar we never got close to scoring. Celtic played some good passing football and they were simple and direct in clearing danger. The second half opened more promisingly for Vics, Allan was only inches away from reaching a low Brayson cross and mark Barnard executed an excellent tackle on Allan as he shaped to shoot from a good position. Vics pressure grew and they forced 3 corners and from one Allan and Charnock got in each others way robbing us of a good chance. Williams came on for Brayson on the hour and in a rare Celtic raid Charnock did well to rob Banim as he seemed to be going clear. A five-minute spell determined the final result and it was here Vics had the luck. Carr and Barnard went for a high cross and it dropped loose for Jonny Allan to volley it first time into the top corner giving Pettinger no chance. Off another corner Byrne produced a good save from Pettinger and on 72 minutes we had an amazing let off when Rogers pushed a tremendous Banim free kick on to the underside of the bar, it bounced along the goal line and as Celtic forwards rushed in Handyside seemed to knock it with his knee, again, on to the underside of the bar and clear. From then on excellent goalkeeping by Rogers rather than luck kept us ahead. A close range effort from Garvey was well stopped and in injury time the save of the night to block what looked a certain goal off a point blank effort by Sykes. At the final whistle Garner and Carr ran half the length of the pitch to deservedly congratulate Rogers. Attendance: 834
