Peter Wilson reports on Vics' one goal win over Leigh:
The reality from this game was that a single goal deficit did not truly reflect the gulf between the two sides and should fans wish to make a realistic reflection on the progress that their team has made over the last year then they ought to remember that ANY win against Leigh would have been previously gratefully accepted.
Vics dominated possession from the start? and their measured approach play could have resulted in more than the single goal advantage they gained in the 17th minute. The influential Stuart Elliott took a quick free kick that cleverly released BRAYSON on goal and he drew the keeper before concluding another accomplished finish. In truth it seemed likely that a feast of goals would ensue, but football rarely turns out that way. A superb three man move ended with a precision pass from Elliott that set Brayson clear again but this time his attempted lob was gathered by the exposed Lamb. Mayman then set Brayson up to get the better of Coyne but his finish ended wide of the goal. Roca? headed wide from yet another promising move before Leigh eventually rallied to provide some input to anotherwise one-sided game. Lancaster had a 25 yard shot saved and then Leigh's best player, Chris Williams, took adavantage of an Elliott errror to beat McCarthy before firing into the side netting,
The second half continued with Vics producing the superior football and? McCarthy shot wide from a purposeful move before a deft touch from Brayson set up Roca but again the finish did not match the quality of the approach play.? Vics continued to squander chances with Brayson firing wide and successive shots being blocked. As the game entered an? unrequired final few anxiuos minutes Roscoe shot narrowly wide and Brayson and Allan both shot wide of the post when clear on goal from two identical opportunities.
But, at the end of the day, Vics gained two invaluable points that will probably prove to be far more vital than the outcome of Tuesday's impending FA Cup replay.
