MATCH REPORT FA CUP 3RD ROUND PDF Print E-mail

Apologies for this match report from Pete Wilson being late due to technical difficulties but hopefully worth the wait! Despite Sunderland occupying a place at the foot of the Premiership the gulf in class between them and Vics was always likely to be decisive and Vics best hopes of providing a historic upset were always centred on a good start to the game. Sadly the opposite proved to be the case and after just 6 minutes they fell behind to a frankly disappointing goal. Defenders might have done better than allow Sunderland to win a corner on the right and after Tommy Miller had his shot blocked Neill COLLINS crashed a shot in off the underside of the bar. The huge relief to the home crowd was almost tangible and Jonathon Stead and Julio Arca both went close to adding to their lead. To Vics credit, a lesser team may have capitulated but they typically refused to lie down. Gradually they began to win the ball in most areas of play and Elliott shot narrowly wide before a deflected free kick from Brayson brought an important save from Kelvin Davis. Such was Vics emerging confidence that it was somewhat against the run of play that Sunderland broke to score their second and seal the tie, although admittedly Stead had been previously unlucky to see his shot from a tight angle strike the foot of the post. Yet it was Vics who were pressing at the time when the outstanding Dean Whitehead regained possession on the edge of his own box to find Lawrence and when he released Stead it was WHITEHEAD who had continued forward with sufficient purpose to guide the cross beyond Rogers. Another possible cue for the Premiership side to complete a rout? Not against Steve Burr's boys !!!! Yes Stead and Lawrence both spurned opportunities but Vics continued to stick to their task and, despite enjoying a two-goal cushion, the home side began to look increasingly uncomfortable and Vics star man Stuart Elliott went desperately close to reducing the arrears. Carr headed an Elliott free kick onto the roof of the net and Allan broke down the right to have a low cross unconvincingly pushed out by Davis and then Justin Hoyte denied Roca with a brave challenge when he looked destined to score. But it just wasn't to be and a minute later Rogers beat out a Lawrence shot only for Anthony Le TALLEC to follow up and score. Lawrence bounced a shot off the woodwork and Rogers completed two good late saves to ensure the score line remained a realistic indication of how well Vics had done and surely a fairer reflection would have been recorded had Davis not produced the save of the game to keep out a 25 yard Elliott blockbuster. At the end of the day all the players should be proud of their efforts!! I, for one, will never forget the site of the flotilla of coaches that wormed its way down the approach way to the impressive Stadium of Light, but would ask that those people now continue to support their hometown club to ensure their rightful return to the National Conference. Attend: 19,323 Man of the Match: Stuart Elliott
