Peter Grimnes reports on a late win for VICS against Lancaster: VICS 3 v 2 LANCASTER This was a game Vics had won at half time, lost with 10 minutes left and won through a never give up attitude in the end! Facing a strong wind Vics opened brightly and after only 2 minutes a Battersby cross was kicked off the line. It was only another 2 minutes before we went in front. A corner on the right was played short to Brayson and his centre saw Carr gain amazing height on his jump and power a header into the far corner. Vics small but fast forward line gave Lancaster all sorts of problems with their excellent passing and pace and it seemed 3 easy points could be on offer as their defence looked slow to react. Their only decent chance in the first half was a long-range effort from Brown that produced a great fingertip save by Rogers at the expense of a corner. Keeper McMillan dived to save a Williams cross but as heavy rain started to fall and conditions deteriorated so did Vics accurate passing. The game lost all rhythm for both sides and the only efforts of note were a Williams shot that curled wide of the far post and an easy save by McMillan from the same player who should have done better from the position he had. At half time Lancaster had posed no threat and despite losing their way somewhat Vics still looked comfortable. That feeling was soon shattered as a different Lancaster side came at us in the second half. The wind had eased making their task easier and the first warning of what was to come saw ex-Vics loan player Matt Bailey side foot a deep corner narrowly wide. On 53 minutes Bailey headed against the bar and Handyside just managed to scramble the rebound off the line when a goal looked certain. Lancaster had sussed Vics weaknesses and started playing long fast balls through the defence and winning crosses in the air. It was no surprise when they equalized just before the hour. A lovely cross field ball from the left found Eckersley on the right, his first touch pass into the middle was perfect for Bond whose own first touch was a side foot just inside the post giving Rogers no chance. Vics had brought on Allan for Byrne just before this goal and soon replaced Garner and Mayman with Roca and McCarthy. Lots of effort kept breaking down at the final pass and chances were few. What looked to be the winning goal followed on 78 minutes when a thunderous drive by Skinner was finger tipped over by Rogers. The resulting corner was only half cleared to Bailey who headed the ball in for Taylor to ram home from close in. Credit to Vics, though, for never letting their heads drop and they gained their reward with 8 minutes left when an Elliott ball out of defence was beautifully played into the path of Williams, who carried it on outpacing the defender to score low into the far corner. Given the visitors second half display many might have been happy with a draw but man of the match Williams was there in the 90th minute to seal it for Vics. He received the ball wide of the penalty area on the right, looked up and volleyed a great drive that rocketed in under the bar. It was a goal that deserved to win any match and, no doubt, contributed to his nomination as man of the match. .
