WOKING 3 v 2 VICS

This was a good end to the season despite the result. A following of 100 Vics fans, many in fancy dress and wigs contributed to the now traditional end of season party atmosphere and the players of both sides, with little at stake, made it an entertaining game.

Vics nearly went ahead after only 3 minutes when forcing a good save from Gindre diving to the right. Woking responded immediately and Roberts blocked a Marum shot at the other end. One of those bizarre footballing moments followed on 7 minutes when Woking rushed out to play Vics forwards offside from a Byrne free kick leaving Roberts completely alone with the ball and no flag. He appeared confused thinking he was offside and hesitated and Gindre rushed from goal and kicked clear. The clearance hit the ref and rebounded to Dean on the edge of the box with acres of space and a now open goal but he shot wide!

Soon after the ever dangerous Marum pulled down a ball turned and shot and forced an excellent save from Senior, tipping it over the bar. He then made another good save from Bunce before Byrne put a free kick inches wide with Gindre beaten. Both sides continued to play attacking football and the inevitable goal arrived on 22 minutes to Woking. Brayson played a through ball that Bunce intercepted and played back to keeper Gindre, he picked it up but the ref failed to award Vics a free for the back pass and off his kick Barwick saw his attempt to clear hit Marum who made the most of his luck going down the left and and scoring well. There were more goals in this type of game and the next fell to Vics, somewhat luckily! Brayson went clear and he and the keeper raced for the ball. Gindre appeared to get there first and pushed the ball clear but Brayson fell and Byrne sent the keeper the wrong way off the penalty.

The game continued to be as entertaining in the second half, but in all fairness Woking were the better team throughout. Charnock made a great tackle to deny Lambu. Vics season long vulnerability to set pieces cost them a goal after 54 minutes when a Selley free kick found Hutchinson unmarked to head home at the far post. Senior made another great save off McAllister and Hutchinson cleared a Dean header off the line. It continued to be end to end with Woking edging it and their 3rd goal came off yet another set piece. Once again Selley put the kick in and this time McAllister got the header back across goal for Smith to score from 4yards. Senior kept the score down with yet another good save from Selley before Townson hit the bar from the edge of the box.

Chris Williams came on but has yet to find his touch (understandably) and when Brayson set him up he skied his shot over the bar. Vics pulled a goal back on 90 minutes when a really good free kick from Townson curled over the wall and the keeper into the far top corner. There was no fairy tale ending, though, and it was Phil senior who gave us the last memorable moment of the season when he made a point blank save in stoppage time.

All in all a good game. Little to choose between Senior and Charnock for man of the match but Keiron just gets the vote.

Around 80 Vics fans remained in the Woking club after the game to see the presentation of the Distant Vics player of the year award which went to Michael Carr.
