Peter Wilson and Peter Grimes report on an excellent two - nil win for VICS at Harrogate:
After an even first half Vics went ahead on the stroke of half time after a well worked goal from Mark Devlin.
It was a game of few chances until the last 5 minutes. Half chances to Harrogate saw Elleker head narrowly wide and then Payne headed a cross from ex Vics player Roy Hunter on to the top of his own bar. At the other end Roca put a chance wide from a good position and on 38 minutes Devlin replaced the injured Carr. Almost immediately a lovely 4-man move between Allan, Chapman Brayson and finally Roca saw the winger miss a simple tap in as he scuffed his finish wide.
The goal came on 44 minutes when Vics played the ball down the left to Brayson he chipped it beautifully to Devlin who took it in his stride went behind the defence and slipped it into the corner. The half was marred by a booking for Jonny Allan for diving into a tackle unnecessarily.
A good solid first half from Vics who welcomed Charnock back into the centre of defence and pushed Payne to right back and McCarthy to right midfield with Mayman being the player to sit on the bench.
The second half saw Vics go 2 up quickly when scorer Devlin turned provider for Roca. He actually played a pass to Allan, but Allan couldn't keep his feet and the ball ran through to Roca who made no mistake placing it just inside the post. Apart from a header by Elleker, Harrogate rarely threatened and Vics maintained control of the game right through to the end without needing to press hard.
Man of the Match - Mark Devlin who made all the difference when he came on. For once the forwards were not the stars of the show but this was a good and professional display of the type that wins leagues!!
