Peter Wilson reports: Saturday 10th September 2005 Hednesford 1 (McMahon 73) Vics 4 (Sale 14 Allan 21 33 63) An opening 45 minutes of high quality attacking football meant Vics were able to surge into an uncatchable lead, they surely could be forgiven for taking their foot off the pedal a little in the later stages of the game, to eventually cruise to another comfortable and impressive win. The game was barely three minutes old when Roca danced down the left to cross for Sale to head on to Mayman who had his goal bound shot deflected wide for a corner. Hednesford created two early opportunities of their own but Rogers saved from Paul McMahon and then Grant Beckett. Just 14 minutes had elapsed when Vics took the lead with a goal of some quality. A superb 25 yard lofted precision pass from Maynard eluded a defender to land at the feet of Mark SALE and he took instant control to score with an equally precise finish into the bottom corner. Vics swept the ball from flank to flank and with Hednesford chasing shadows soon added a second. Roca cut inside to thread a pass that released ALLAN on goal and despite being driven wide by the close attention of Lee Barrow he was still able to angle a shot of sufficient power to beat Tommy Whittle, although the keeper ought to have done better than allow the shot to get through his guard. Allan then in typical determined fashio n created his own opening but his shot was deflected wide for a corner. From the kick Sale had a header cleared from in front of the posts and then he latched onto the rebound to drive narrowly wide. The home side continued to look vulnerable to the constant wave of Vics attacks and it came as no surprise when they fell further behind. A quality cross from McCarthy caused more consternation for the keeper and his defenders leaving ALLAN to react the fastest and nip in to stoop and score with a close range header. Whittle came out bravely to save at the feet of Carr following another incisive three man move and then Allan should have scored when a long ball out of defence left him clear on the Hednesford goal but although he had time to steady himself to beat the exposed keeper he miscued his shot toward the corner flag. Byrne replaced the injured Mayman at half time as Allan continued to strive to complete his hat trick and after he combined with Elliott he was denied by a Whittle save. Sale, who was deputising impressively for the indisposed Paul Brayson, worked an opening for Carr and he looped a shot marginally over the bar. A superb 35 yard run from Byrne ended with a shot which curled wide of the post before the home side used all their three allocated substitutions in one go in a vain attempt to get into the game. Branch did manage to set up Craig Marshall but his finish was wayward before a determined run from Chapman brought Vics fourth. The increasingly effective full back got determedly down to the line to drag a cross back for an equally determined ALLAN to get on the end of and force over the line. To be fair, Vics took their foot off the pedal from this point on and after Barrow crashed a free kick against the upright and Marshall again shot wide from another good position McMA HON eventually reduced the deficit with a close range strike after Vics had failed to clear a corner. McMahon, far and away the best home player, again went close before Roca got the better of Adams in the box but was denied by the faintest of touches from Whittle. The game ended with the outstanding Carr winning the ball for the umpteenth time to get down the right and cross for Roca to slice wide from in front of goal.
