Peter Grimes reports on a convincing win for VICS: VAUXHALL 0 v 3 VICS This turned out to be an easy 3 points to take Vics back to the top of the table. This was a thoroughly workmanlike performance, which we dominated for almost the whole game and looked like a team that knew it was good. A quiet opening saw little direct action at either end until Vauxhall squandered what was to be their best chance of the match on 17 minutes. After Brayson had a couple of shots easily saved by keeper Billing (a reserve team midfielder called in after a bad injury to their first choice keeper last week) Vauxhall won the ball on the right. The cross was weakly punched by Rogers and the ball fell loose to Furlong 6 yardds out but he scuffed his shot and Handyside cleared off the line. Vics started to look more dangerous after this and the pressure gradually built up. They played a lot of balls wide left to Williams to try and exploit his speed. A lovely pass from Carr to Brayson saw a shot pushed beyond the far post by Billing but he could do nothing about the opening goal from Allan. Elliott crossed a harmless looking ball into the middle and no one in the Vauxhall defence seemed to move leaving Jonny Allan to run in on his own and head easily into the net. Garner - Brayson - Williams saw the winger cross for Allan to volley and pull another good save out of Billing and it was no surprise when we went further ahead just before the break. This time Jon McCarthy chased and won a hopeless loose ball near the corner flag and centred for Williams to run across goal and turn it in at the near post. After the break Vauxhall tried to step up a gear and looked better for 10 minutes without really getting near Rogers. However, it was always going to be Vics who scored. Brayson was clear on 53 minutes but lobbed over the keeper and the bar, Allan crossed low through the box and just behind Brayson and Allan headed narrowly wide off a McCarthy cross. The inevitable came on 70 minutes when a good Battersby cross from the right saw Sale head down for Brayson to score from 8 yards into the bottom corner. After that it was a formality and Vics dominated with Sale going closest off a header. A little flurry in stoppage time saw Rooney have 2 chances but convert neither. A solid professional display from Vics who, for once, killed off the opposition effectively and dominated what was left of the game. At least 2/3 of the crowd was from Vics and most of us sensed the title is now in touching range. Man of the Match Peter Handyside. Attendance: 529
