Farsley Celtic V Vics

Saturday 23rd January 2010
Blue Square North
Farsley Celtic 2 (Sayers 42 Ellington 71)
Vics 3 (Bailey 55 Spencer 73 Dutton 80)

Brian Dutton proved central to most of Vics early initiatives by heading a long Herring throw marginally wide and then working an opening for himself that home keeper Piotr Skiba did well to dash out and thwart by producing a fine save. Vics were taking time to settle while at the same time the home side were unable to create major concerns for Northwich. A Junior Brown corner was met by a Bailey header that was spectacularly turned over the bar by Skiba. Dave Syers guided a cross over the bar when well placed before Junior Brown carelessly gifted possession to allow Celtic to move quickly forward to set up SYERS and he opened the scoring from 12 yards. A hard fought, if rarely exciting, first half ended in an explosive finish when Simon Grand was harshly shown a second yellow for an innocuous 50/50 challenge on the home keeper following a legitimate attempt to be first to connect with a loose ball. Skiba’s subsequent reaction led to an unsavoury lunge at Grand and a straight red card for Celitic’s goal custodian.

HALF TIME : FARSLEY CELTIC 1 VICS 0

Preece reorganised his pattern to accommodate the loss of his defender and switched to a 4-3-2 system. Vics immediately became more positive leading to the opportunity for BAILEY to score with a header from a Riley corner. Northwich seemed set fair to continue on and produce the win but were delivered a 71st minute set back when ELLINGTON scored from close range when proved first to reach a Gareth Grant cross. The Vics response was fast and effective and SPENCER did well to squeeze a shot between the keeper and his post and bring the scores back onto level terms.. Sensing maximum points were available Vics pressed forward to deliver a final onslaught on the home defence and after Dutton and then Riley had gone desperately close to scoring it was DUTTON, who ensured that he was on hand to take the opportunity to seal a Vics win from a late strike.
