Tuesday 22nd April 2008
Stevenage 1 (McMahon 70)
Vics 2 (Carr 12 Byrom 58)
Dino Maamria always believed that Vics would survive, most of the time against seemingly impossible odds, and his faith was clearly taken on board by his players and manifested itself at Stevenage with another performance that made a mockery of their current league position and resulted in them claiming a win that secured their place in the Blue Square Premier for next season.
Make no mistake this was the culmination of hard graft backed by skill and the 163 Vics fans that travelled to Hertfordshire were rewarded with an event and outcome that will long last in their memories.
Vics looked the more focussed from the start and were good value for their early lead when CARR once again found the net from some 25 yards. Tynan pulled off the save of the season when he reacted quickly to turn a free kick through a cluster of players around his post, despite not having had a sight of the ball until the very last moment. Ryan Brown did well to work an opening for Crowell and his shot was only partially saved culminating in pandemonium in the home defence that was only relieved by a desperate clearance. Such was the passion showed by the men in green there was an incident that evolved around a clash between Lee Steele and team mate Matty Crowell that was eventually defused by their colleagues leaving them all to continue more pressing business. Willcock and Grant both failed to make the most of a pair of half chances that fell to them but otherwise Vics went in at half time as the better team.
Stevenage looked more determined after the break but the more creative openings continued to be made by Northwich. David Brown got behind his marker to force Masters into a full stretch save before the much vaunted Morison finally got the better of the solid Vics defence only to shoot wide. Yet another slick Vics move led to them increasing their lead just before the hour. Steele foraged forward before sweeping a pass wide to his left and when Ryan Brown hit a measured low cross BYROM ghosted in between defenders to complete the perfect finish. Unsurprisingly the home side set about trying to claw their way back into a game that before kick off they may have felt to have been a formality. And they did grab a lifeline with 20 minutes remaining when MOORE spotted a gap between the Vics defending wall, the keeper, and the post and duly scored from his 25 yard free kick. Further Stevenage pressure proved to be more frantic than measured and the outstanding Roberts, again more than ably aided by Kerr and Meadowcroft , ensured that this was to be Vics night. A night that, as it reached its finale, was befittingly enhanced by the late introduction of Vics hero, and favourite, Jonny Allan. There remained one final moment of irony when former Stevenage player and now Vics manager Dino Maamria was banished from the touchline for zealously disputing the 7 minute stoppage time awarded, during which Tynan again pulled off another excellent save to complete and ensure the resultant miracle.
In recent weeks I, and others, have travelled over 1000 miles and undergone just about every emotion available to a football supporter, but on Tuesday 22nd April 2008 at Stevenage it became more than worthwhile.
